A massive hello to all of the people who are reading this blog entry!

I am thrilled because i have just completed my family story.  Through the process I learnt so much about my family history and about some of the living conditions and stories that happened during war times.  I couldn’t be happier with the result, especially since it was my first try at creating a love story.  Read it and it would be nice to get some comments on your opinion and how i could improve it:

THE MOMENT OUR EYES MET

Patricia Fraser, May 12th 1943…
It’s been nine whole hours now; standing in the same spot is causing my hands and feet to ache severely.  I am frightened by this building, in which it is dark and gloomy.  Here in Arendsen, just by glancing in the eyes of someone near you, you can sense the overwhelming fear.  The stillness illustrates the anxious thoughts behind our secure words.  As the war drags on, life is just another shade of grey as I continuously make these gaiters for the brave soldiers, serving us well.  But my thoughts can no longer be heard and are taken over by the repetitive questions in my head…Why do they have to fight?  Why is life so grey?  Why do people have to kill to earn power?
“Plonk, plonk…plonk”.  Oh no, what now!  Day after day I work until the exhaustion is so staggering that I drop to the ground.  I don’t need a broken machine to add to my life of terrible events.  What if they see me not working and sack me immediately?  I can’t lose my job; I have to support my family!
Wait…who’s that?  A tall, dark haired sturdy man, confidently strolling towards me.  In his rough, scruffy hands he clenches a large toolbox to fix the machines that break down.  At this point I am slowly gathering a little bit of hope, and I can’t help but just stare at him.  He’s here to save my day!  My life just seemed like a miserable repetitive blur, until the moment our eyes were drawn together.

Lennox Moore, May 12th 1943…
I was hired as a handy man to fix complicated machines that break down, probably because of incompetent constructing.  I was hired to be busy all day, helping people out, when in times of strife. But it didn’t turn out exactly as I had expected.  The majority of the machines are in perfectly good condition and I find myself constantly strolling around searching desperately for someone in need of help.  I wonder how my brother is coping out in the war.  Just from walking around this gloomy place I can sense the fear in everyone’s eyes.  I wonder how he is coping with actually having to live the horrific thoughts that are created in our minds.
“Plonk, plonk…plonk” Aha!  Sounds like trouble to me.  Now I just to locate where the problem is coming from, for in this large, gloomy building; noise travels fast and it is hard to track down.  The unpleasant plonking sounds echo and roar over the disturbing silence.  I look carefully while I stroll around with my new toolbox ready to mend.  Wait…who’s that?  A quiet, delicate young lady too tranquil to be working.  She has gleaming auburn hair, tucked back trimly in a bun.  Her cheeks are blossoming with a rosy red colour and her eyes are as clear as the sea, and are, are looking right at me!  Some hope in her eyes slowly floats to the surface.  I’d better shape up and look confident, because I’m here to fix her machine.  My life just seemed like a wreak until the moment our eyes were drawn together.

Lennox and Patricia Moore, August 18th 1958
It’s been ten bright, joyous married years together, we think to ourselves as we cuddle up on the cozy couch.  We are successful proud parents to three young boys so far.  At this moment they are finally settled and resting peacefully in bed.
After the war was over we both moved on from those horrible jobs, which only seemed to refresh the horrific memories that dwell somewhere deep and dark inside us.  Although times are still challenging, we use the thoughts of each other to get us through each day.  And finally at the end of the day when we are at last united in love, we cherish and praise the Lord that we have each other.  We are together slowly maturing through our time and it is a mystery of when our time is up on earth. But we will forever be together as one and always have been, ever since the moment our eyes met.
                                  The End

Hope you enjoyed it and hope to hear from you soon,

Heyz to everyone reading this!

In earlier blogs i said that i was writing a essay on the comparison of take away foods, and said that I had finished.  Well my English teacher, who set up the blogs for us, asked us to publish it on the blogs, so here is mine:

Subway is healthier than McDonalds.

Subway is healthier than McDonalds because it contains less fat, sugar and calories and has larger quantities of protein.  Case studies such as Morgan’s “Super size me” diet, show that diets based on McDonalds lead to extremely unhealthy lifestyle habits, compared to Subway based ones.  The increasing number of McDonalds outlets has matched increased obesity rates.
The majority of McDonald’s foods are saturated in inappropriate amounts of fat and sugar.  Although McDonald’s Deli Choices may have been advertised as being nutritionally good for you, in comparison with Subways food products, it isn’t all that it seems to be.  McDonald’s Vege pesto Deli Choice roll contains 6.6 more grams of fat, a massive 104 more calories, 3.3 more grams  of sugar and only 6.6 more grams of protein, comparing with Subway’s Vege Delight.  McDonald’s Thai chicken in comparison to Subway’s Roasted Chicken Breast sub, both containing relatively the same contents, McDonald’s have 2.1 grams more fat, 21 grams more of calories, 8.2 more grams of sugar and lastly 5.9 less grams of protein.  These two examples are representatives of the total menu choices of both stores and leave little doubt that the fat, calorie, sugar and protein levels of McDonalds make it a less healthy alternative.
Various studies tend to suggest that McDonalds is less healthy then a diet based on Subway.  In the main study of the McDonalds “Super size me” diet, experimented by Morgan Spurlock, it only ended in unhealthy results.  His challenge was to eat every McDonalds for every meal of the day, over the time frame of a month.  By the end of the month he had to consume every item on the menu, and have agreed to a Super sizing deal, which is upgrading the size of the product, every time he was offered.  Before he began he was thoroughly examined and tested by doctors and nutritionists.  After a long struggle, Morgan completed the task which resulted in gaining 24.5 pounds, cholesterol shot up by 65 points, liver turned fatty, doubled risk of heart disease, depression, exhaustion and the risk of getting respiratory problems, asthma, impaired infertility, diabetes, gall bladder disease, prostate cancer, sleep apnoea and hypertension.  In comparison to this, Jared S Fogle took on the challenge of basing his dieting habits around the menu of Subway.  With personal intentions to lose weight and become healthy, Jared took on this diet for a year having Subway for all three meals in the day.  Completing a successful, life changing diet, he lost an amazing 425 pounds and have continued to inspire fans and viewers to lose of 160000 pounds, and still counting.  Comparing these two cases, McDonalds is shown to be a disgraceful, health crisis contributing to the 100,000,000 obese and overweight people in America.  These results, while supporting the case, are not conclusive because the results were biased in favour of Subway due to Jared incorporating exercise.  This was not the case with the “Super size me” diet.
The nutritional information and case studies are important factors in the nutritional comparison between McDonalds and Subway.  The experience of individuals also points in the same direction as the facts.  Whilst the influence of advertising is unclear, a survey reveals the general belief that Subway is healthier.  Some opinionated comments made about Subway include: “I like the fact that you know you’re eating something healthy, and I like the taste of it all, it fills you up.  It normally tastes fresh and it’s just basically what you like.  It has a variety of different yummy things”  “Subway is completely awesome and I could eat it everyday of my life.  I like the amount of control being able to serve myself drinks”  “its cool how you could pick whatever you want on the subs and it actually leaves you full and you know that you made a healthy decision.”  When asked about what they thought of McDonalds, their replies consisted of: “After you’ve eaten it you feel sluggish and fat because you know what you’ve just eaten.  You fill full for half and hour, and then suddenly hungry because it’s not real food that you’re eating.”  “They act like it’s healthy but they’re hiding the true facts, they are sneaky by adding extra salt so you are tempted to by drinks aswell.”  The majority of a surveyed group agree with those statements made.  In fact a large 68% preferred Subway to McDonalds and a massive 93% thought Subway is healthier.
It is not coincidental that increases in obesity, and the expanding number of McDonald stores, occur at the same time.  Case studies and analysis of the nutritional value of the two options lead clearly to the view that McDonalds is less healthy than Subway.  All of the arguments in the world will not prevent many individuals using their free will to buy what they see as an appealing menu regardless of its health impact, so the choice is up to you.

Hope you understood it alright.  Okay the bell is about to go, hope to post another blog soon.

hey everyone!

It’s the long weekend for everyone living here in Melbourne.  I wonder what everyone is getting up to.  i’m playing netball, working and doing alot of homework.

In English class at the moment we have to write a family story, and i’m not sure whether to do it on my grandma and grandpa who moved over to Australia from Maderia (an Island off Portugal), or to do it on my Nan who met her husband during the war times.

Melbourne is a pretty big city if you think about it…around 4 million people living in it.  Comparing to a town in central Canada – Snow Lake who only have around 1600 people.  I’d like to say hi to those students who have been replying to my blogs, thanks it’s wonderful to hear what you have to say.  I am having a few minor problems replying to your blogs but hopefully i’ll get it working soon.  If you are reading this, i was wondering how old are all of you?  i know you are in grade 7/8 (and have a much advanced vocabulary) but our ages for year levels might be different to yours.

Hope to get some more great comments

My PoEm…

hi everyone!  i decided to put on this blog a poem i wrote recently that was in my poetry anthology.  it was based on some kind of image or text of our choice.

ANGEL’S WHISPERS…

A whisper here, A whisper there,

A secret told is not to share.

A warm breeze trickles past your ear,

A soothing presence oh so near.

All of the times when you were down,

This calming presence could be found.

The gentle sound up lifts your head,

The angel’s whispers have been spread.

Keep blogging everyone!

Receiving comments from Canadians!

October 26th, 2005 by · 15 Comments · Uncategorized

Hey everyone…i’m sooooo excited (along with my teacher and classmates).  After visiting some Canadian’s blogs and then commenting on them i later received some comments from the teacher and students.

Just to let everyone reading this and who read my recent blogs…i’m slowly getting over my disburbing nerves.  Although the piano concert was an embarrasing disaster, the little talk in class was fine!  My teacher Mrs McLeay (who started up these blogs with us and persists us to continue) makes me feel comfortable talking in front of the class and also being more confident.  i think also since i got a part time job, it boosted by confidence level because i am continuely approached with customers who i have to talk to, which slowly makes me feel more confident.

I would just like to say a large HeLLo! to Mr Fisher and all of his students going through the journey and excitement of blogging…it’s a great experience.  A special hi to the students who left comments on my blogs: Ellyn, Anna, Nikita, Ara, April, Amanda, Nasya, Jenni and last but not least Hillary.  sorry if i missed anyone!  By the way, if you guys are reading this, i’m slowing reading all of your interesting blogs and eventually leaving comments.  I’m sorry i cant be any quicker but i have to keep up with all my studies.  if you were interested, i’m in year 9 and currently in a 9/10 english class.  hope to keep in touch with you guys!

Hey, we’ve been asked to write yet another exciting blog, and to be really enthusiastic about blogging usually (even outside class) and also to comment on other’s blogs.  Well it’s only Tuesday and it seems like this week has been as a long as a year!

I’m extremely ecstatic to have finally finished the persuasive essay on the comparison of Subway and McDonalds, which I was talking about in my most recent blog.  I ended up with a stack of research on different factors, and to show I had actually done I added it into the plastic pocket when I handed in the final.  The final essay is full with facts and a lot of study and information; it truly hurt my head writing it!

Just as I expected the assignments keep coming, as one is completed another is received.  Just to inform you about my next challenge (assignment) we were just asked to bring a photo of a family moment…which could range from a family portrait to a holiday snap shot or even a picture of your ancestors.

Honestly I don’t have a clue of what I’m going to bring in, oh I forgot to mention that in class we’ve got to give a quick talk on it too, which isn’t the best news for me!  Since you might not know me to well I just tell you a fact that is necessary to know when watching me talk, perform or stand up in front of people…… I get really nervous!!!  Now you’re probably thinking that I’m exaggerating and that everybody gets a few nerves here and then, but that’s not the case with me!  I recently performed at a music concert, playing a grade 5 piano duet.  Well things didn’t go down to well, especially with me being nervous for an entire week before the actual performance.  When I got up to play, my hands started shaking and I felt like I couldn’t breathe.  And like expected, I stuffed up the piece and felt so terrible afterwards………back to English class, I don’t think I’ll get too nervous over just a little talk, but nerves always do creep up!  I just have to keep in mind what my Dad says to encourage me “Perpetual Optimism is a force multiplier”.  When I come to think about it – it’s a good quote.

Talking about quote, Hayley (another class blogger) gave me a really good website for sayings.  If you get the time, check it out!  But just a warning a lot of the quotes are in msn form, for example:

every 1 is perfect. u just have to look beyond the imperfections

It isn’t life that weighs us down, it’s the way we carry it

friends r like the quiet angels who lift our feet when our wings forget how 2 fly

Here’s the address:   http://www.sarahsparklingsite.com/

Well it’s time to go; hopefully another of my blogs will be coming soon,

Another new assignment to add onto the list!

October 12th, 2005 by · 12 Comments · Uncategorized

After getting back from the school holidays our class got back the results from our large poetry anthology, which I worked extremely hard on.  I was ecstatic to find out my mark because it was such a big relief to finish the assignment and it was even better to top it all up with a good mark.
Well, like in every subject one assignment is completed and another has begun!  We recently received our new task of writing our Personal Best writing project.  We were given a free choice of whatever topic we desired, but under certain criteria.  I wanted to be different in what I chose as the topic, but not knowing what everyone else were choosing how could I make it different?  Well I was really interested about health issues of take away foods and how much people consume of it.  So I decided to do mine on the comparison of Subway to McDonalds and what people thought of them.  I couldn’t just write it, leaving people choose which they prefer, I needed to convince the readers that SUBWAY was more healthy and extremely better for us!
For this to work I needed to take some serious research into proportion, so that all of what I put into the essay were true.  I decided to research:
*      A survey of what people preferred and what they thought were healthier
*      Facts about the ‘super size me’ story
*      Facts about the ‘Jared diet at subway’
*      Nutritional information about Subway and McDonalds
*      Exactly what people thought about their food
*      Menus of both places
Well all of those things weren’t really necessary for you to know, but I thought I might include it so you could see what I’ve been up to.
School has been quite busy with heaps of assignments from all different subjects have been just piling in on me.  I think I’ve written enough, so I’ll say goodbye.
Luv
Tiffany

A fun experience!

September 14th, 2005 by · 12 Comments · Uncategorized

hey everyone who’s reading this!

i was told i had a free choice of topic for this current blog, but the teacher advised us to write something about learning. So i had to think for a while about what i could write and then remembered how much i really enjoyed last lesson in VPE, which is People Problems. In that class we were asked to design our ideal house from a birds eye view. What a fun task!

It’s exactly like playing the SIMS at home on the computer except its on paper. I included funky items such as a gym, a disco room beauty salon, spa, sauna, indoor swimming pool, theatre, theme park room, games room and such rooms like that. Then we had to fill out a sheet on the amount of appliences we would have in the house and if we thought that they were a luxury or neccessity. Of course these were not the amount of appliences that we actually had at home but it did make me think about the cost of electricity and water that we use on luxurys.

After that we had to rate a range of questions about certain topics like extinction on particular animals, should rubbish bags be dimolished, is global warming a worry and restriction on elctricity and water usage. i thought all of the house designing and questioning was a great creative fun way for an introduction to the next topic of the ozone layer, environmental problems and global warming…things like that. I’m not 100% sure of the next topic i gave a pretty good guess from the activities we just did.

So i found that class an interesting way of learning, although come to think of it now we do do a lot of fun and interesting activities in that class. Like at the end of the year, since this is a geography class, our teacher is planning to set up a large small version of “The amazing race” on TV. But she is planning for us to do it on Norbury Green, which we will get prices and find clues to follow up and search around for the solution in our minds for general knowlegde, on the atlas or some arond the environment which it will be set. I really can’t wait!

Normally teachers end the term or year with lots of assessments and tests (which i’m sure will happen in VPE) but at least our class have something else to look forward to.

Hope everyone is enjoying the end of the term and preparing for an awesome holidays…yay!

Time’s nearly up!

At the moment i’m being bombarded with other homework and assignment for other classes…but i’m coping.  The poetry anthology’s due date is creeping closer so i hope everyone will have it completed by then!

For my last poem – free choice relating to a text – i’ve decided on my idea.  i was thinking of doing it on the topic of nature, but i havn’t yet selected the image.  i wanted the poem to be set out as either a sonnet or some style we havn’t done one on yet.

i’m pretty sure i’ll get it all done in time but i fail to think of a creative way to set it out…looks like it will be in a display folder like normal!

Dictionary usage…

August 31st, 2005 by · 136 Comments · Uncategorized

well in last lesson we got more in touch with the DICTIONARY!!! in groups we were challenged to look up 10 words in the dictionary with 3 syllables, and we had to classify the definition and origin…interesting!
i learnt quite a few different words which i could use against the intelligence of my younger brother. Once a week in his classes at school he learns a new word and when he comes home he uses it in such an intelligent way…none of the family understands him and it really annoys me.

i think i’m processing well with the poetry anthology…i’ve nearly finished except i’m not exactly sure of what to do with the last poem about response to text or image…but i’m sure i’ll work it out!

until next time,

love Tiffany
